The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory

The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory

Three noble women share one tragic fate...

After reading that on the back how could I not be intrigued. The story is from three points of view: Anne of Cleves, Jane Boleyn Rochford and The young Kitty Howard.
It's set after the executions of Anne and George Boleyn. Now I find historical fiction fascinating and this was no different. We all know the story of Henry the 8ths tyranny but Gregory writes it with a refreshing flare.

Anne of Cleve's marriage to Henry was a disaster from their tragic first meeting. She humiliated him so from there he makes her life a living hell. And we all know that whom Henry doesn't like have a way of losing their heads. EEKS! Poor girl not only does she have to deal with the rumors of her unappealing smell, ugly homeliness, her husband's oozy wound and her husband's wandering eye and peen...Ahem! Little Miss not so virginal Kitty Howard. She has to worry about the "off with her head!" factor. Okay wrong historical figure but you get the idea.
This book was pure courtly Gold! It spans from July 1539 through January 1547. The reign of Anne and Kitty. As well as the much deserved fall of Jane wanna-be Boleyn Rochford.

I recommend reading this book, highly. I was taken into this story not only because of my love of Tudor England but the story wasn't at a textbook. It was behind closed doors, conspiracy and backstabbing that had me saying, "You bitch!" Out loud. It was great. I stayed up all night to finish and it was so worth it. It was like a time machine.

1-2 combo

When you first decide to write a book it seems so simple. Hey I'll just tell the story. You imagine yourself original with a unique writing style. You want one of a kind characters. I know I did and deep down in that shiney and new part of me, I still do. I want a hero-heroine 1-2 punch combination. To the point that from when they are together it's where you say "Wow, they just work." There is no triangle. No other pieces fit in there two-piece puzzle. Just him and her the end of the story. Well, uh not quite. There actually has to be more to that story. But not some lame as petty differences or minute lie that is written bigger than it is. My 1-2 combo know they are supposed to be together they just have to figure out, how.
They need to figure out how to make it when their only problem is them.

Well, that's the goal. The bar has been set. The only question is, can I do it?

I Hate Surprises

I don't what it is about me, but I hate not knowing what is going to happen. That aspect about me even affects my reading. Some people enjoy the suspense I find myself in a battle of self control to not read ahead to appease my nature. Some books I can pretty much SEE where the story is going so the desire is easy to deny. But I just started a series that's well into book four so I know a lot is coming and I want to know now. It so hard for me to not cheat and cut to book four for peek. When it is so at the tips of my fingers.

Is my willpower that strong? I wouldn't count on it. People always tell me it would ruin the book, in a failed deterrent. But I am not a, point to point what's the bottom line person. I am a oooh, so tell me how they got from point A to point Z. But I try to fight this need to be in control, need to know impulse because it's not the author's intentions. And I am all about respecting their hard work, whenever I can help it sometimes my obsession to know gets the better of me.

My Soul To Take- Rachel Vincent

As promised, My Soul to take review and I have nothing but fan girl rants. Ready? OHMYFREAKINGGOSH! I mean wowza. I have not read a story this original since uh hmm? I want to say ever, but that is untrue and unfair. So I will say its been awhile. Generally I have a problem with characters harping on how plain jane they are, unremarkably unattractive they are and/or how so amazing they are but since this is teenage girls, I find it acceptable. And even if I say I don't remember being as hot under the collar as Kaylee, I would be lying if I said I never was. It's just been so long. That said, the only real problem I had with the book was how fast and uneventful Kaylee and Nash established coupledom. And why? There was no time for us to see What they liked about each other, besides the fizzle business in the parts below. But that can be chalked up to my age. I need the substance that builds lasting love not the tingling neither parts that feeds luurve. But again hello, high schoolers.

Now to everything else which I love. I loove it wasn't the overdone vampires, werewolves, shape shifters ect. Which even when done right and unique is still sort of like old hat. So kudos right off for that.

The characters were believable teens. The loyalty, the cliques, the stereotypes groups. I am a firm believer that cliches are based in facts. Cheer/dance squads are mainly bitchy, girls within the same age range in same family have that competition for attention, girls do try to screw each other over when it comes to a high school hottie. So it was all believable.

Now the imagery and consistency of it. Now with me I get bored with the background description unless I am editing then I hit the OCD mode to make sure it is described the exact same way every time. But other than that I sorta skim until I get past it and back to the substance. But that's just me. The netherworld description was well done.

Okay, maybe I was a bad kid but if my parents pulled the crap her family pulled, they would not get off the hook that easily. I would be highly pissed. Honestly, you chose to hospitalize and drug me up rather than tell me what was up? Hell no would they live that down. Kaylee was mad, which I loved but not mad enough. Kaylee was snarky but not nearly enough. I suppose most people aren't lucky enough to be raging bitches when a situation calls for it.

Best of all it left me begging for more in the series. And unlike house of night Kaylee is not near the whore of the heart Zoey is. Which is hard to do in a YA novel. YA Girls love boys boys boys! And Vincent adds that hmm nice 3 point dimension to the story.

So basically I have and will continue to recommend this series. I will also be reading other novels by Rachel Vincent while I wait for the next in the Soul Screamers series. I also love that they majorly take place in my neck of the woods...

Book reviews

Here is the thing, I will never be comfortable dissing another writer's work. And trust me I have come across some diss worthy crap. I also will never give bad reviews mainly for one reason. If the book is garbage I don't finish it. I am not the kind of person who MUST know how a story ends even if it tortures me. Nope. I can walk away.

Now bad things in a would be perfectly good book does not completely ruin the book. Like I hate STUPID secrets! The ones you have no idea why its a secret, but the author is acting like its a huge deal that will ruin the would be relationship. Or the secret they hold on to for way to long then it gets revealed, dramatically I might add. Then annoyingly the other person acts way over the top. But I can possibly get past that if that isn't the main tension in the story. I've only read one book with supposed mind-blowing secret done oooh sooo right, C.E Murphy HANDS OF FLAME. Eliseo Daisani's secret and Janx's reaction, yes yes YES! Chills people, chills. They aren't a couple but still it works. He's secret changed everything.

There are really 3 things that I won't even try to read past. What I can't get past is a heroine who is too stupid to live, too weak to speak or stand up for herself. A heroine who is too kick ass to the point where I think Mr. Hero should check her for a pair of balls before he considers laying her! And last but pisses me off the most, male chauvinistic jerks who treat the heroine like a dainty piece of paper that belongs to him. And growls every time another male enters the room basically saying "mine." And the bitch lets him get away with it. "Hell no buddy!" I wouldn't put up with that shit! But then again I do have to regularly check myself for a set.

Up coming reviews and a contest maybe.
Night's edge (3 parts w/contest)
My soul to lose/take
CAST IN SILENCE (woo-hoo!)

That is if they end up being good. If not you won't hear me mention the book again.
